BLACK PAUSES
With this installation of paintings, Ole C. Hansen investigates what kind of spatial poetry can be created in the encounter between the room’s white walls, monochrome black paintings, and polychrome paintings.
What carries the expression is less the visual power of each individual canvas than the interference that inevitably arises through their juxtaposition. The individual canvases are regarded here as free, interchangeable pictorial elements, and the approach is contrapuntal and layered in the sense that the entire space is first arranged in the most dramatic contrast; black canvases on a white wall. Subsequently, a number of polychrome canvases are hung/installed, whose overall structural form serves to clarify the tensions and relationships between the individual parts.
The white wall represents absolute presence of light—the unfiltered visual impression that is so intense it becomes blinding.
The monochrome black painting represents the absence of light—the infinite dark void in which there is nothing to see.
The polychrome painting represents the intermediate tones, all the light that constitutes the living world between black and white—the inwardly glowing, wildly torn, ecstatic light. The infinitely porous space of colour.
A unified poetic vision is articulated here, in which the individual parts support and legitimize one another’s presence through the organized whole. The polychrome, coloristic paintings in particular call for pauses and structure in order to come into their own.
The exhibition is supported by Initiativpuljen, City of Aarhus.
